Who needs a dental extraction?

At River City Dental, we always want our patients to keep their natural teeth whenever possible, and we are committed to practicing conservative dentistry. However, there are some situations that require one or more gentle dental extractions to restore a patient’s oral health. If a tooth has incurred a great amount of tooth decay or dental trauma and it cannot be restored using a dental crown or other dental restoration, it may need to be removed and replaced. In other cases, issues like crowding and impaction may require a dental extraction.

Can I return to work or school after a dental extraction?

Dental extractions are invasive procedures, and we always advise our patients to take at least the rest of the day off after having one or more teeth removed. Resting is a crucial part of the recovery process, as too much activity too soon can cause a dry socket to develop. Once you return to work or school after a few days, we still recommend taking it as easy as possible and sticking to mostly soft foods. Our team will provide you with detailed instructions for you to follow and refer to during your recovery.

What can I eat after a dental extraction?

Post-extraction, you will want to stick to soft foods and liquids as much as possible. We recommend stocking up on foods like yogurt, oatmeal, applesauce, blended soups, avocados, smoothies, and cream of wheat before your procedure, as most patients do not feel like grocery shopping after having one or more teeth removed. You will also want to make sure that you do not smoke or drink anything through a straw during your recovery, as this can cause the blood clot at the extraction site to come loose. Crunchy and sharp foods like nuts and chips should be avoided during this time as well.
