Foods That Can Harm Your Smile

What you eat plays a major role in the health of your smile. There are many foods that are great for your teeth, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, and lean protein. Other foods can increase your risk of developing dental disease. Here are examples of what you should limit in your diet:

  1. Sugar
  2. When bacteria on the surface of your teeth break sugar down, they release acids that damage your enamel and irritate your gums. This can result in teeth sensitivity, cavities, and gum disease. Natural sugar is found in a variety of foods, which is good because carbohydrates are an important source of fuel for our bodies when consumed in moderation.

Whenever possible, choose foods that are low in natural sugar and high in healthful vitamins and minerals. High-sugar and high-calorie foods that are low in nutrients should be limited. This includes foods like candy, chips, cookies, crackers, pastries, and white bread.

  3. Alcohol
  4. Some alcoholic beverages are acidic, making them damaging to your enamel. They can contain sugar without any nutrients. Additionally, tannins in red wine can cause deep staining, which require professional-grade whitening to lift.

  5. Orange Juice
  6. Oranges, while full of vitamins, are also high in citric acid. Because citric acid can be damaging to your teeth, you should avoid drinking orange juice. To obtain the benefits of oranges, eat them whole and follow up with a few sips of water. This allows you to enjoy its nutrients, fiber, and flavor without the risk of serious enamel erosion.

  7. Tea & Coffee
  8. Tea and coffee are acidic and carry a high potential for staining due to their dark-pigmented particles. Limit your consumption of these beverages and, whenever possible, drink water instead. You may find you save some money and lose a few pounds without your daily Starbucks coffee!
